The building has a sports hall and youth centre built to passive house standards
The new school's progress is coming on in leaps and bounds.
Even though the ground-breaking ceremony was held last November it was possible to hold the topping out ceremony on the 12th September.
The city school district, youth- and social services as well as the town planning services are all taking part in the project.
To mark the topping-out ceremony Mayor Jutta Ebeling said: "Riedberg secondary school with its linguistic and scientific focus, and the connection to the Goethe University, will become a beacon on the educational landscape.
The representative for social, senior, youth and legal matters Prof. Daniela Birkenfeld said "I think it's wonderful that this can be seen in the building and I'm very sure that other communities will be jealous of our new secondary school." and went on to add "We want to offer a project that focuses on ten to twenty year olds.
To complement the traditional components of a facility like this, which includes seminar rooms, cafés and youth workshops, we also have a multi-purpose room for family-oriented services.
Specifically, we will set down the key points for the concept at a planning conference, which is expected to be early 2012.
These were some of the decisions made by the youth welfare committee over the past week."
The managing director of the HAStadtentwicklungsgesellschaft Friedhelm Flug confirmed that construction is on schedule: "At present everything is running on schedule.
We are especially happy that the sophisticated design of the architecture competition winners is being implemented on a 1:1 basis; this isn't always the case nowadays.
The new school represents another big step forward for the district. "
The school is the first new school of its kind in Frankfurt for about one hundred years.
The resulting building complex, containing a youth centre and a sports hall will be used by around 1,350 students.
The forward-looking building with its passive house technology is a place for learning and life in the young district of Frankfurt.
The planners are Ackermann + Raff architects and town planners together with Pfrommer + Roeder Freie Landschaftsarchitekten who won the architecture competition in July of last year.
The winning design envisages a large-scale, divided structure that assigns the different functional areas to their own, distinctive "school houses".
The jury was of the opinion that this facilitated better orientation inside the large school and would lead the students and teachers to quickly identify with "their" school.
The new school will be place of learning and a place to live: The plan is to expand the current program to a full-day school operation with various activities on offer.
The future sports hall will be open for organised sports, and thus provide further offers to residents of the district. The project should be finished in spring 2013.
