Groundbreaking for Mutter-Kind-Haus

16.01.2012

The Frankfurt trust 'Waisenhaus' is building a new mother-child-house with enough space for 12 young mothers and their children in the district of Riedberg on a 1,200 square meter site. The facility, to be located in Ginsterhöhe-West, offers accommodation and support for mothers and pregnant women. In total their are six apartments with facilities for two mothers and their children and ones suitable for pregnant women.

The new facility's target group is to be made up of teenage mothers and other young single mothers to be, who qualify for help under § 19 SGB VIII. The facility cares for people who aren't suitable for care as out patients. In these situations it will accept the women for a short term stay at the centre. This also includes round the clock care. The centre offers young mothers professional support both in medical matters and psychological issues allowing them to properly care for their children. Support and consultation from social workers allows the women to develop themselves both personally and professionally. Individual solutions can be found through active coaching, discussion and practical tips relating to everyday life. For example: educating children, healthcare and support when dealing with local authorities. As part of the social work, good parenting training helps to hone skills and abilities needed for daily life. As well as the accommodation in the mother-child-house there are 12 places for small children up to three years of age and an in-house nursery school. The children are supervised from 7.00 until 17.30. They also offer flexible childminding during parenting workshops for example.
The new building will replace the current facility in Frankfurt Bornheim, that was built in 1995 and taken over by the charity's funding body. The building itself has never been altered and no longer meets the needs of a modern care facility. A conceptual change and contemporary modification to suit the needs of the mentoring clientèle were needed. In 2010 the decision was made by social services to grant the Waisenhaus organisation a plot of land in Riedberg allowing them to build a new mother-child-house.

The new building was designed by renowned architects Baufrösche Architekten und Stadtplaner and boasts an incisive shape with rounded corners. The building is free standing and is surrounded be public paths and streets. The build is made up of two wings, which create a protected courtyard that includes a south facing terrace. One central tree will be planted here. There's lots on offer for small children under three. There's an awning too so it's no problem if you just need to leave the buggy out of the sun for a while. The remaining green area is used as an extensive lawn. The boundary is marked with exposed concrete and along with the metal fencing and adjacent hedge rows provides privacy. Access to the building is completely barrier-free . An ample transom/mullion façade on the ground floor accentuates the south east facing opening onto the patio and sheltered courtyard. The building has a green roof. The northern façade is more introverted and a glass mosaic will complete it. The upper floors will be executed using a thermal insulation composite system.

The Waisenhaus organisation is solely committed to non profit ventures that serve to further society as a whole and has a place as one of the larger organisations working in the field of child support and youth assistance in Frankfurt am Main. Supporting disadvantaged children and young people is their main focus. The project is being realised as part of Riedberg's urban development measures and the project management is being carried out by HA Stadtentwicklungsgesellschaft mbH on behalf of the city of Frankfurt am Main.
